Industrial Revolution Essay "More Harm Than Good?":
The Industrial Revolution did many good things and also did many bad things, but in the long run I believe that the Good and helpful things thought moved us forward outweighed the bad things that held us back. The Industrial Revolution brought us new technology like Bathrooms, Telephones, and Stoves. We use all of these things in everyday life today and without the hurtful things that happened we would have never gotten what we have. Overall the Industrial Revolution did much more good in America than it did harm.
This important time in our history did more good because if you look at a graph on the “Occupation of American Workers 1870-1920”, it shows that the percentage of workers that were farmers went down dramatically from over 50 percent in 1870 to over 30 percent in 1910. This shows that during this time of the Industrial revolution, workers and economy went from being mostly agricultural to being a lot more industrial, in factories, and working in the cities to create new technology. This graph alone shows that although the times were hard, people were still working and were moving more towards what was going on in that era, Industrialism.
Something else to show that the Industrial Revolution did more good than harm is the idea and the invention of the transcontinental railroad. This alone created a way for people to get from the East to West much faster. The railroad also made it easier to transport resources and building materials to out west so that new cities could be built and families could be started. The Transcontinental Railroad created new jobs for the people of the east, but it also brought immigrants in for hard working conditions and cheap labor which in reality had more positive effects than negative effects. The way that the Immigrants were treated was a horrible thing, but without them we would not have a thriving society out west.
The most important thing that the Industrial Revolution brought to America is all of the new Inventions. Here are multiple examples of the inventions that were created during this era. There was Music and tape machines, bathrooms, telephones, vacuum cleaners, stoves, cameras and cars! These all came from the chart we did in class called “Invention/ Technology development chart. Every single one of these inventions we still use today and without the industrial revolution we would not have them. This alone would be the main reason I believe that the Industrial Revolution did more Good than Harm.
Now some may say that so many women, black people, and many others were persecuted and put in harm’s way just to get to where we are today. This argument is very true, but it was worth it. That too many probably sounds like a horrible thing to say but in reality, even though woman were killed having to work in such horrible conditions in factories, and black people were seen as things and not human being and were hurt severely, they are the heroes that got us here. I am so happy to have everything I have today and without all of these people i would not have them, but you also have to think about it this way... if these people didn’t get hurt, persecuted, or even killed at times then we would not have what we have today. This is why i believe that the Industrial Revolution did more good than harm.
In this essay I have explained why the Industrial revolution did more good than harm, and i stick by this because of the new technology, and the new Transcontinental Rail Road that brought our great country and people out west. Both of these things are amazing and without them and the people that were hurt during it we would not have the great country that we have today. If you do not care about the industrial revolution and what it did, then you should not be here. This country was built on new technology and the new inventions of that time. As time goes on we are always having an industrial revolution because of all the new things that come out each and every day. This revolution, though it hurt many, is what boosted this country and what built it up in the 19th century. All this country knows is to grow and become more and more just because of the Great Industrial Revolution, and that is why I believe that the Industrial Revolution did more good than harm.
